Biography
Background
Ron Schöningh was born in Drunen, The Netherlands, in 1961 and started his career in biochemical research. In 1997 he started studying graphic design at the Academy for Visual Arts and Design, “St. Joost” in Breda. After graduating in 2002 he founded the design / internet studio Myxt which he still runs today. In addition to his daily work, he travels quite a lot and is inspired by deserted landscapes. Photos with traces of human intervention led him to create his own stories in autonomous work.
Work
With his roots in laboratory research, he became interested in photography and design. Stories became increasingly important through photography. This started with membership of the Sinus foundation under the supervision of Frans de la Cousine and Paul den Hollander. Over time, his work became more autonomous and other materials were explored to express himself.
Among other things, he is inspired by the ordinary in nature, such as the small plants that grow along the road when he cycles to his studio. We all have memories of flowering verges, but we can hardly remember a detailed picture of everyday plants. The ‘unnoticed’ offers him the opportunity to investigate the relationship between perception, memory and reality. How does memory influence our perception and to what extent are we able to perceive reality, whatever it is? For this, he digitally edits photos until abstracted traces remain that encourage the viewer to take a position.
The shapes and structures in these photos are the starting point for paintings in which he investigates the tactile quality of paint and canvas. As a spin-off, he started making gum prints, connecting this old (chemical) printing process with modern digital darkroom techniques and using his laboratory skills again.
